Match the layer of the epidermis with the correct description: 1. Stratum basale: single layer of cells 2. Stratum lucidum: layer only present in thick skin 3. Stratum spinosum: contains melanocytes 4. Stratum granulosum: receives melanin granules from melanocytes 5. Stratum corneum: nuclei start to degenerate 6. Stratum germinativum: area of rapidly dividing cells 7. Stratum lucidum: thickest layer on palms and soles of the feet 8. Stratum corneum: layers of dead, flattened cells 9. Dermis: contains blood vessels and connective tissue

3. Using the key choices, choose all responses that apply to the following descriptions. Some terms are used more than once. Key a. stratum basale d. stratum lucidum b. stratum corneum g. reticular dermis e. stratum spinosum c. stratum granulosum f. papillary dermis 1. layer of translucent cells in thick skin containing dead keratinocytes 2. two layers containing dead cells 3. dermal layer responsible for fingerprints 4. epidermal layer exhibiting the most rapid cell division 5. layer including scalelike dead cells, full of keratin, that constantly slough off 6. layer named for the numerous granules present 7. location of melanocytes and tactile epithelial cells 8. area where weblike pre-keratin filaments first appear 9. deep layer of the dermis 10. layer that secretes a glycolipid that prevents water loss from the skin

Drag the text blocks below into their correct order. The next layer is the stratum lucidum which is present only on the soles of the feet, hands, fingers, and toes. The stratum granulosum is named for the presence of dark staining keratohyalin granules, which bind the cytoskeletal keratin filaments together. Comprised of viable, cuboidal, and columnar cells, the stratum granulosum contains the keratinocyte stem cells that replenish the exfoliated cells at the surface. The stratum spinosum is made up of multiple layers of dead keratinocytes that regularly exfoliate. Towards the apical surface, in the stratum corneum, the keratinocytes cease cell division, while at the deeper regions, they can still undergo mitosis.
