Waterborne illness is caused by drinking water contaminated by disease-causing microbes or pathogens. They typically cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Examples of other diseases are: - Amoebiasis: A parasitic infection of the colon with the amoeba Entamoeba histolytica. - Typhoid: Typhoid fever caused due to food washed with contaminated water and can turn out to be life-threatening for the person suffering from it. - Ascariasis: It is the most common intestinal worm infection, which occurs due to consumption of contaminated water and raw vegetables contaminated with Ascaris eggs. - Hookworm: Other untreated environmental water and effluent were contaminated with waterborne parasites. The main waterborne parasite is hookworm. The most serious effects of hookworm infection are the development of anemia and protein deficiency caused by blood loss at the site of the intestinal attachment of the adult worms. - Giardiasis: Giardia infection (giardiasis) is one of the most common causes of waterborne disease in the United States. The parasites are found in backcountry streams and lakes but also in municipal water supplies, swimming pools, whirlpool spas, and wells. Contaminated drinking water is estimated to cause diarrheal deaths each year. Bathing in contaminated water can cause certain health problems.
