CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS
1. A patient has been feeling tired lately and having morning headaches. He has not been to a physician for 10 years. He works hard, drinks alcohol excessively at times, and is 30 lbs overweight, but otherwise has no significant medical history. His blood pressure is noted to be 160/110 mm Hg. As he leaves the office, he comments that he hopes his blood pressure gets cured fast because he does not want to be on medication when he goes to Europe this fall. How should he be counseled regarding his medication?
2. A patient has just been diagnosed as having a duodenal ulcer. Her physician prescribed a bland diet, an antacid (Maalox), and cimetidine (Tagamet). She expresses to you her annoyance with her bland diet (she is a gourmet cook) and secretly worries that she will become a drug addict. How would you help her understand her treatment?
3. A patient has been taking propranolol hydrochloride for hypertension. She states that lately she has been feeling weak and listless. When taking her vital signs, you notice her pulse is 58 beats/min. Is this related to her medication? Should the physician be notified?
