The density of blood cells is approximately 1125 $\mathrm{kg} / \mathrm{m}^{3}$, and about $1 \%$ of the cells are white blood cells, the rest being red blood cells. The red blood cells are about $7.5 \mu \mathrm{m}$ across (modeled as spheres). (a) What is the mass of the blood in a typical human? (b) Approximately how many blood cells (of both types) are in the blood?
Human blood is composed of red blood cells that have no nucleus, white blood cells, platelets (fragments of cells) and plasma (a non-cellular liquid). You are a forensic investigator and have been given a blood sample to analyze for DNA. Which of the components of blood would you use for your analysis? Clearly explain why (and why not).
