The primary food source for all young mammals is milk produced in the mammary glands of their mothers. Forty percent of the calories in milk are from the sugar lactose. In nursing mammals, lactose is digested by the enzyme lactase. After the age of weaning, mammals stop producing lactase: 75% of humans cannot digest milk after the age of two. Without adult production of lactase, milk consumption is not beneficial. Undigested lactose causes nausea and gas production and overall loss of water and nutrients due to diarrhea. A genetic mutation allows lactase production after the age of weaning. People who have one or two copies of this mutant gene continue to produce lactase into adulthood and can drink milk without becoming ill. Explain how natural selection would act on the trait of lactase production into adulthood in (1) a human population with a tradition of dairy farming and (2) a population with no tradition of dairy farming. In your answer, address the two conditions that are necessary and sufficient for natural selection to bring about evolutionary change in a trait within a population.
