Custodial institutions are often alleged to be ineffective in reforming the offender. Also, there is a growing tendency for inmates to organize within the prison on the basis of ethnic militancy or radical ideology. Another trend has been toward imposing longer sentences on violent offenders. These two trends make serious, widespread inmate rioting an increasing threat that is likely to end in tragedy. The paragraph best supports the statement that A) part of the criticism of imprisonment is based on the apparent ineffectiveness of imprisonment as well as on the dangerous conditions within prison facilities. B) there is widespread encouragement regarding the role of imprisonment as a successful inhibitor of subsequent criminal action. C) without new methods of handling convicted offenders, the existing correctional system must become either much larger or even more dangerously overcrowded than it is now. D) it is increasingly difficult to adequately staff prisons due to the dangerous conditions and widespread rioting that prevail inside them. E) an increasing tendency for inmates to organize among themselves has had the effect of making the prisons slightly less dangerous and easier to administer.

Correctional Services Canada uses a rating system to classify prison inmates according to security risk level. A higher security risk level classification has consequences such as withdrawal of certain privileges and increased likelihood of serving out a longer sentence. In a study published in the Canadian Journal of Criminology and Criminal Justice it was observed that Aboriginal women are often classified at a higher security risk level compared with other female prisoners. They found that 41 of 68 Aboriginal women inmates were classified as medium security risk, while 112 of 266 non-Aboriginal women inmates were similarly classified, though fewer infractions had actually been committed by the Aboriginal women while incarcerated. Let πA be the proportion of Aboriginal women inmates classified as medium security risk. Using a uniform prior for πA, find the posterior mean of πA. (Note. Round answer to 4 decimal places. Provide numerical value only. No units needed. Thanks!)

Harsh, mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenses account for more than half the population in U.S. federal prisons. The bar graph shows the number of inmates in federal prisons, in thousands, for drug offenses and all other crimes in 1998 and 2010. (Other crimes include murder, robbery, fraud, burglary, weapons offenses, immigration offenses, racketeering, and perjury.) a. In 1998, there were 60 thousand inmates in federal prisons for drug offenses. For the period shown by the graph, this number increased by approximately 2.8 thousand inmates per year. Write a function that models the number of inmates, y, in thousands, for drug offenses x years after 1998. b. In 1998, there were 44 thousand inmates in federal prisons for all crimes other than drug offenses. For the period shown by the graph, this number increased by approximately 3.8 thousand inmates per year. Write a function that models the number of inmates, y, in thousands, for all crimes other than drug offenses x years after 1998. c. Use the models from parts (a) and (b) to determine in which year the number of federal inmates for drug offenses was the same as the number of federal inmates for all other crimes. How many inmates were there for drug offenses and for all other crimes in that year?

Think about our prison systems. Many folks think the role of the prison system is to punish people who break the law, and that we should have more prisons to punish more people. But let's look at what happens to the average burglar. If (s)he is caught, (s)he will probably not go to trial for a year or two and then is likely to get probation or a light sentence. If (s)he does go to prison, (s)he is unlikely to learn any useful skills and will meet other criminals who will probably not be good role models. Additionally, (s)he may not end up serving his/her entire sentence due to overcrowding conditions in prisons. Given what you know about learning, cognition, and social influences, critique the way our current prison system works and suggest some better ideas. Be sure to be specific about the principles that you have learned from this course. And, make sure you address, at a minimum, learning theory, cognitive psychology, and social psychology.
