Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that affects the respiratory and digestive systems. People with cystic fibrosis inherit a defective gene on chromosome 7 called CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator). The protein produced by this gene normally helps salt (sodium chloride) move in and out of cells. If the protein doesn't work correctly, that movement is blocked and abnormally thick sticky mucus is produced on the outside of the cell. The cells most seriously affected by this are the lung cells. This mucus clogs the airways in the lungs and increases the risk of infection by bacteria. In humans, normal chromosome 7 (C) is dominant over CFTR (c). A heterozygous man for this trait marries a woman who is also heterozygous. a. List possible genotypes of their offspring._______________________ b. List the phenotypic ratio for their children.______________________

Autosomal Recessive Disorder: Cystic Fibrosis Cystic fibrosis is lethal autosomal recessive disorder in humans. It is the most common fatal disorder in the United States. Its hallmark is bacterial infections of the lungs and intestine. A woman who is a carrier of cystic fibrosis (Cc) has children with a man who is also a carrier (Cc). What are the chances that a particular child will have cystic fibrosis? What are the chances that a particular child will be a carrier? Genotypes of the parents: Father: Cc Mother: Cc Punnett Square: (sperm) Cc x Cc = Cc, CC, Cc, cc (egg) List all possible genotypes of offspring of these parents: CC, Cc, Cc, cc Which of these genotypes are heterozygous? Cc Which of these genotypes are homozygous? CC, cc List all the possible phenotypes of offspring of these parents: Normal, Normal, Normal, Cystic Fibrosis Calculate the probability of each genotype and phenotype as listed. Fill in table on the following page. Cc 50% CC 25% cc 25%

Cystic fibrosis is one of the more common life-threatening genetically inherited trait that is only expressed in the phenotype of homozygous recessive individuals (ff). The condition results in the body producing abnormally thick sticky mucus that can clog the lungs causing severe infections and/or obstruct the pancreas preventing digestive enzymes from reaching the intestines. The average human frequency of cystic fibrosis is about 1 in 3,300. The statistic, 1 in 3,300 is the same as 1/3,300 or 0.0003030. A. What are the allele frequency for cystic fibrosis in the population? Be really specific with the decimal point value. B. What is the genotype frequency for cystic fibrosis? Be really specific with the decimal point value. C. What percent of the population is expected to be normal, producing healthy mucus that is thin and fluid? Be really specific with the decimal point value.
