d. Look this Up: Because Heme is inorganic, our bodies do not have the capability to break it down. Use your notes and text to describe the organs involved in eliminating Heme from our bodies. [The organs involved with eliminating heme from our bodies would be the liver, spleen, and the bone marrow.]

Put Erythrocyte Destruction in the correct order: 1. Biliverdin is broken down into bilirubin which enters the blood and travels to the liver. 2. Hemoglobin is broken down into globin protein, iron, and biliverdin by macrophages in the spleen and liver, which digest erythrocytes. 3. Erythrocytes become trapped in the sinusoids of the spleen and liver. 4. Bilirubin enters the bile and is excreted into the small intestine and moves into the large intestine where it is converted to stercobilin and excreted in the feces. 5. Bilirubin can also enter the blood and go to the kidneys where it is converted to urobilin and excreted in the urine. 6. Protein is broken down into amino acids which enter the blood with iron to be recycled and used to make new hemoglobin in red bone marrow.

Which of these statements regarding hemoglobin breakdown are true, and which are false? True False Bilirubin is excreted through the kidneys. Digestive enzymes convert bilirubin to urobilinogen. Heme is converted to bilirubin in the blood. The breakdown of RBCs occurs predominantly in the spleen. The breakdown of RBCs results in the liberation of heme globins and iron. The metabolism of heme results in the production of carbon monoxide (CO).
