Human papillomavirus (HPV] is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States; almost all sexually active people are infected with HPV at some point. HPV can be contagious even when an infected person shows no symptoms, and symptoms may not appear until years after infection. Some but not all strains of HPV can cause genital warts and cancer. The HPV vaccine is very effective and is recommended for all young people from the ages of 11 to 26 years. What steps would you go through to decide whether to vaccinate yourself or your child with the HPV vaccine? (Hint Use the method for evaluating scientific claims, including assessing real science versus pseudoscience.]
Part of your job at the Obstetrical and Gynecological clinic is to council young teenagers about the risks of STDs and how to prevent them. Some of them have no information about these diseases and the critical consequences. They are surprised to learn that HPV is the most common sexually-transmitted infection in the US. Health problems caused by HPV include genital warts, cervical cancer, oral cancer, and penile and vaginal cancer. HPV is so common that nearly all sexually active men and women will get at least one type of HPV at some point in their lives. Most people aren't aware they're infected and may give HPV to a partner without knowing it. About 79 million Americans are currently infected with HPV. About 14 million people become newly infected each year. Preteens should receive all three doses of the HPV vaccine series long before they begin "any" type of sexual activity and are exposed to HPV. To add to the academic conversation, reply to your classmates/instructor by introducing a new idea that applies personal experience(s) and/or new knowledge gained from either courseroom material(s) or research. Discuss with a classmate the benefits of this vaccine.

Recently, studies have shown a reduction in the prevalence of some strains of HPV in younger women. What might be the reason for this?
