Distinguish between the two-component signal transduction systems and the phosphorelay signal transduction systems by classifying the characteristics of each group. Two-component signal transduction system (1/2) Phosphorelay signal transduction system (2/2)
Added by Patricia A.
Step 1
- Phosphorylation chemistry: phosphotransfer occurs directly from histidine (on the HK) to an aspartate (on the RR). - Mechanism: usually a simple, two-step process (autophosphorylation of HK, then transfer to RR) with a direct response. - Output: the Show more…

What are the two components of a two-component signal transduction system? What does each of them do?
Nick J.
Plant phosphorelay systems, which are thought to be derived from bacterial two-component signaling cascades, are in fact not found in plants, and any similarity is the result of convergent evolution. A protein phosphatase (PP2C) dephosphorylates the kinase domain (e.g., SnRK2) to prevent signal transduction. These systems are also found in animals and involve a series of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK, MAPKK, MAPKKK, etc). A phosphate is passed from the sensor histidine kinase to the histidine phosphotransfer protein (Hpt) and then to the response regulator (ARR). The receptor is part of the ubiquitination process (E3 ligase), targeting the repressor for degradation (proteasome).
