A new antibiotic has just been discovered recently. The effectiveness of this drug is shown below. To determine the method of action of this antibacterial chemical, you culture a bacterium in two bioreactors containing nutrient broth, add the new drug to the test broth after 20 hours, and analyze both media. Protease activity is easily measured because protease is an extracellular enzyme. Questions: 1) What bacterium did you use as your test organism? 2) What is the method of action of this antibiotic? 3) Why does this antibiotic affect bacteria and not human cells?

Did you observe any small colonies growing in the zone of inhibition around the antibiotic disc? Explain how this might occur. 2. You test a clinical specimen of Streptococcus with the antibiotics penicillin and tetracycline. The zones of inhibition for penicillin and tetracycline are both 20 mm. What does this tell you about comparing zone sizes and the use of the antibiotic zone diameter chart? Is this organism sensitive to both of these antibiotics?
