Drinking cups made of polystyrene (PS) are to be made at a rate of 600/hour using a simple 2-cavity, 2-plate, cold runner mold. The dimensions of the cups are 2.5 inches in diameter at the base, 3 inches in diameter at the top rim, and 5 inches tall. The base and walls are to be uniform, 0.01 inches thick. The mold has been designed so that the runners and sprue have a volume of 0.16 cubic inches and a projected area of 1.7 square inches. The reciprocating screw injection molding machine available for this job has the following characteristics: Maximum shot size = 0.1 lb and clamping force = 100 tons. The plasticating and injection temperatures are 230°C and the peak mold/runner pressure is 15,000 psi (103 MPa). The density of PS at 25°C is 0.0383 lb/in³. Evaluate the capability of this injection molding machine to do the job from the point of view of: a) capacity to deliver the required shot size b) clamping force.
