Drinking cups made of polystyrene (PS) are to be made at a rate of 600/hour using a simple 2 cavity, 2
plate, cold runner mould. The dimensions of the cups are 2.5 in diameter at the base, 3 in diameter at the
top rim and 5 in tall. The base and walls are to be uniform, 0.01in thick. The mould has been designed so
that the runners and sprue have a volume of 0.16 in$^3$, and a projected area of 1.7 in$^2$. The reciprocating
screw injection moulding machine available for this job has the following characteristics: Maximum shot
size = 0.1 lb, and clamping force = 100 tons.
The plasticating and injection temperatures are 230$^\circ$C and the peak mould/runner pressure is 15,000 psi
(103 MPa). The density of PS at 25$^\circ$C is 0.0383 lb/in$^3$.
Evaluate the capability of this injection moulding machine to do the job from the point of view of:
a) capacity to deliver the required shot size
b) clamping force.
