Due to its size, the ability of glucose to diffuse through the membrane is very low and would not be useful for the metabolic needs of a cell that requires instantaneous availability of glucose. In a situation where glucose is allowed to enter a cell through the assistance of a membrane protein using only its concentration gradient, the movement of glucose inside the cell will stop once the intracellular and extracellular concentrations of glucose are equal. The entry of glucose into the cell under these conditions would be considered: Passive transport Active transport Passive diffusion coupled transport

Glucose molecules cross the cell membrane by traveling through special proteins without the use of energy. This is known as: active transport osmosis passive transport simple diffusion
Adi S.
Is the glucose transporter an active or passive transport? Describe glucose transport across the cell membrane. How would you calculate the free energy of a glucose gradient? What would the sign of the change in free energy tell you about the direction of the glucose movement across the membrane?
Sri K.
A student is trying to determine the type of membrane transport occurring in a cell. She finds that the molecule to be transported is very large and polar, and when transported across the membrane, no energy is required. Which of the following is the most likely mechanism of transport? (A) Active transport (B) Simple diffusion (C) Facilitated diffusion (D) Exocytosis
