Photosystem II has two reaction centers. P680 (ground state) collects light energy from a light-harvesting complex and becomes P680* (excited state). The P680* loses one electron each and becomes P680+. This happens twice, which means 2 electrons are lost in the process. The oxygen-evolving complex oxidizes water to oxygen according to the following equation: 2H2O → O2 + 4H+ + 4e- The question is, if the two oxidized P680+ molecules get two of the electrons back from the equation above, what happens to the 2 leftover electrons from that same equation?
