Activation Energy Activation energy is the energy required to start a reaction. Enzymes are proteins that bind to molecules, or substrates, to modify them and lower the energy required for them to react. Thermodynamics refers to the study of energy and energy transfer involving physical matter. The matter and its environment relevant to a particular case of energy transfer are classified as a system, and everything outside of that system is called the surroundings. The First Law of Thermodynamics says that energy cannot be created or destroyed. The Second Law says that in any energy conversion, some energy is wasted as heat. ATP: Adenosine Triphosphate is a molecule that carries energy within cells. It is the main energy currency of the cell and is an end product of the processes of photophosphorylation (adding a phosphate group to a molecule using energy from light), cellular respiration, and fermentation. Where does the energy to power such reactions come from? The answer lies with an energy-supplying molecule called adenosine triphosphate or ATP. ATP is a small, relatively simple molecule, but within some of its bonds, it contains the potential for a quick burst of energy that can be harnessed to perform cellular work. Enzymes are substances that help chemical reactions to occur. A catalyst is a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without being consumed in the process. The special molecules that catalyze biochemical reactions are called enzymes.
