Eutrophication is characterized by extreme algal growth (bloom) caused by the rapid input of fertilizers. When the algae on the surface of the water bloom, they prevent sunlight from reaching other aquatic plants found below causing them to die. These dead plants are in turn decomposed by bacteria, a process that requires oxygen and produces carbon dioxide. The decrease of oxygen eventually leads to the death of all other aquatic organisms. Which statement is NOT applicable to eutrophication? Select one: a. Provides an example of top-down food web dynamics. b. Aquatic animals die because they are unable to extract the energy from glucose. c. The lack of light prevents plants from producing glucose d. The addition of fertilizers reduces intraspecific competition between algae. e. Bacteria are heterotrophs.

Algal Blooms Fertilizer run-off (which often contains high concentrations of phosphorus and nitrogen) into aquatic systems results in blooms of phytoplankton. Given your understanding of food webs and limiting factors, which of the following statements regarding algal blooms are likely true? Select all that apply. Nitrogen and/or phosphorus may not be limiting factors in lakes that fail to bloom after receiving fertilizer run-off. Light could become a limiting factor in lakes that bloom after receiving fertilizer run-off. Removing fish that eat phytoplankton could prevent blooms in lakes receiving fertilizer run-off. Algal blooms support the assertion that nutrients are often limiting factors of productivity in aquatic systems.

Eutrophication refers to (A) the process that causes the depletion of the ozone layer (B) global warming (C) the process that happens to a lake that absorbs too many (D) the invasion of new species that causes damage to an (E) ecosystem (E) the process whereby one species outcompetes another species

Eutrophication a. is caused by an overabundance in nutrients that leads to an increase in algae in aquatic environments. b. usually occurs in deserts. c. is a process in which nitrogen is fixed. d. is a necessary part of the nitrogen cycle.
