(Chemical Connections $20 \mathrm{C}$ ) Why were Mark McGwire and Floyd Landis not given the same penalties for taking steroids in their sports?
Research and describe the process of blood doping. Do you think blood doping should be illegal? Why or why not? What negative effects does blood doping have on athletes? (Minimum length of paper 500 words.)

Erythropoietin (Epo) is a hormone that is produced naturally in the body in response to low $\mathrm{O}_{2}$ levels in the blood. The intracellular events that occur in response to Epo binding to its cell-surface receptor are well characterized. What molecule translocates from the cytosol to the nucleus after (a) $\mathrm{JAK} 2$ activates STAT5 and (b) GRB2 binds to the Epo receptor? Why did some endurance athletes use Epo to improve their performance ("blood doping") until it was banned by most sports?
