Gnetophytes are an unusual group of seed plants. This evolutionary lineage appears never to
have had much species richness and <70 species remain today.
There are 3 extant genera: Ephedra, Gnetum, and Welwitschia. Both Ephedra and Welwitschia live in
deserts and Gnetum is native to wet tropical forests. Sporophytes of Ephedra are shrubs, Gnetum
are trees or vines, and Welwitschia grows no more than a few feet tall and produces only two
leaves in its entire life. The leaves of Welwitschia can live for hundreds of years.
