Great Coffee operates stores within six regions. Regional managers are held accountable for marketing, advertising, and sales decisions, and all costs incurred within their region. In addition, regional managers decide whether new stores will open, where the stores will be located, and whether the stores will lease or purchase the facilities. Within each store, store managers are accountable for marketing, advertising, sales decisions, and associated costs incurred. Ideally, what type of responsibility center should be used for the region and the store respectively? Emboldened, start your own venture and open five coffee kiosks in San Diego. These kiosks were unique in that they were located in scenic areas with dramatic views and that they only offered ultra-high quality coffee at more than double what Starbucks and Peet's Coffee charged. Because construction costs of the kiosks were low, you have been able to expand rapidly and now have 183 kiosks up and down the West Coast, from San Diego, CA to Vancouver, BC. The following one-variable summary of last year's profit values from the 183 kiosks: One Variable Summary Profit Mean: $103,832 Std. Dev: $17,002 Median: $105,403 Minimum: $63,631 Maximum: $164,932 Count: 183 1st Quartile: $91,551 3rd Quartile: $114,459 My poorest performing kiosk had a profit of $63,631, while my best had a profit of $164,932. My best or most accurate predicted profit value is per store. The error rate in predicting profit is plus/minus. The middle 50% (half) of the kiosks had profit values between and.

Starbright Coffee Shop at the Galleria Mall serves two coffee blends it brews on a daily basis, Pomona and Coastal. Each is a blend of three high-quality coffees from Colombia, Kenya, and Indonesia. The coffee shop has 6 pounds of each of these coffees available each day. Each pound of coffee will produce sixteen 16-ounce cups of coffee. The shop has enough brewing capacity to collectively brew 30 gallons of these two coffee blends each day. Pomona is a blend of 20% Colombian, 35% Kenyan, and 45% Indonesian, whereas Coastal is a blend of 60% Colombian, 10% Kenyan, and 30% Indonesian. The shop sells at least 1.5 times more Pomona than Coastal each day. Pomona sells for $2.05 per cup, and Coastal sells for $1.85 per cup. The manager wants to know how many cups of each blend to sell each day to maximize sales.
