Gregor Mendel is often called the "father of genetics" because he discovered key aspects of inheritance through his methodical experimentation. Since the time of the Greeks and even before, humans have sought explanations for how traits are inherited. Insightful observations that children look like their parents spurred ideas of preformation (a child was already formed in a sperm) and blending inheritance (a mix or blending of father's and mother's traits occurred in children).
