When compared to skeletal muscle, what differences are observed in cardiac muscle? Cells are fusiform shaped, nonstriated, and contract as a sheet. The force of contraction depends on cell diameter rather than length. Intercalated discs are present and all cells are innervated. The sarcoplasmic reticulum is less complex. Cells are branched and there is a greater abundance of mitochondria. Contraction is triggered by an influx of potassium. The striations are more apparent, and T tubules are more abundant and occur at A-I junctions.
