Renin is an enzyme that converts angiotensinogen, a protein produced by the liver, into angiotensin I. Angiotensin I is then converted into angiotensin II by the enzyme angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor, meaning it causes blood vessels to narrow, which increases blood pressure. It also stimulates the release of aldosterone from the adrenal glands, which promotes sodium and water retention in the kidneys. This leads to an increase in blood volume and further increases blood pressure. The renin-angiotensin mechanism is an important regulatory system that helps maintain blood pressure homeostasis.
