Thomas Hobbes argued for the need of a "Leviathan" an unqualified government sovereign that would be capable of controlling the passions of man. Without this sovereign people would revert to a state of nature where they are guided by their own morals, beliefs and self-interests. How, in Hobbes’ argument, do humans escape the state of nature and create a society that adequately constrains the individual pursuit of self-interest and yet still allows individuals to maximize their freedoms? What, for Hobbes, are the two necessary conditions for establishing a moral order and a society? (Hint: ‘Covenants without the sword are but words’)
