In its resting state, a neuron has more negative ions than it does positive ions, creating an internal voltage of roughly -70 millivolts. This resting state is maintained by a mechanism called the sodium-potassium pump, which is responsible for maintaining the balance of potassium and sodium inside the neuron. This negative charge is temporarily reversed when sodium and potassium ion channels open to quickly alter their flow through the cell membrane, creating an action potential.
