How much atp is produced from a 16carbon fatty acid by beta oxidation
Added by Nicholas D.
Step 1
For a 16-carbon fatty acid, the number of beta-oxidation cycles is calculated as (number of carbons / 2) - 1. So, (16 / 2) - 1 = 8 - 1 = 7 cycles. Show more…

How many molecules of ATP are obtained from the $\beta$ -oxidation of one molecule of a 16 -carbon saturated fatty acyl-CoA?
For each two carbon fragment that is removed in beta oxidation, 1 FADH2 and 1 NADH + H+ are produced. Each FADH2 can produce two ATP, and each NADH can produce 3 ATP. Each two carbon fragment enters the Kreb's cycle. If you were to completely metabolize a 14 carbon fatty acid by beta oxidation, you would get 6 FADH2 and 6 NADH + 6H+ from beta oxidation, and you would have 7 acetyl CoA molecules that would enter the Kreb's cycle. How many ATP would be produced (between beta oxidation and Kreb's cycle redox reactions) -- and don't forget the substrate level phosphorylation that takes place in the Kreb's cycle?
