In the majority of cells, resting membrane potentials are closer to the equilibrium potential of potassium (-90 mV) than for sodium (+ 60 mV). This is because none of the other answers. cells are equally permeable to sodium and Chloride, and each time a sodium ion enters a cell, its depolarizing influence is negated by a Chloride ion. cells attract potassium better than sodium, so they maintain potassium closer to its equilibrium potential. VeqK+ is much lower than VeqNa+, and chemical systems are most stable at lower energy states. cell membranes are more permeable to K+ than to Na+, so a greater number of pathways are available for K+ to move towards its equilibrium distribution than are available for Na+ to do the same thing.

Resting Membrane Potential in Cell. If there is a lower than normal concentration of sodium OUTSIDE of a cell, what occurs? Does depolarization occur? Does hyper-polarization occur? How does this affect the resting membrane potential of the cell?
