The struggle for Blacks to attain their Ph.D. in psychology was extremely difficult in the early 20th century, as many Blacks were rarely admitted into White institutions. And of course, there were initially no doctoral programs in Psychology at the Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). During the period of 1920-1950, only 32 African Americans received their Ph.D. in the field of Psychology/Educational Psychology. Given the negligence of the discipline to showcase the contributions of African American/Black psychologists, you are to identify these 32 scholars along with the other specified credentials. The first example has been provided (see page 2). A social psychologist hypothesized that a white person is more likely to cooperate with another person than a black person in a task requiring cooperation (this would be considered an alternative hypothesis). To test this idea, he conducted an experiment in which white subjects either worked on a task with a white person or a black person (both of these "others" were confederates of the experimenter). Thirty-one subjects were randomly assigned to the "white-other" treatment (let's call this treatment 1) and 31 were randomly assigned to the "black-other" treatment (this is treatment 2). If the mean cooperation scores, on a scale from 0 to 20, were 14 for those subjects in the "white-other" treatment and 12 for those in the "black-other" treatment, run an appropriate test to test the social psychologist's hypothesis. Let us further say that the variance for the cooperation measure for the "white-other" treatment was 2.48 and the variance for the "black-other" treatment was 2.52. Use α = 0.05 and run the test using the formal 5-step procedure.

Problem Set 1: Research Scenario: A clinical psychologist is studying the relationship between experiences of racial discrimination and anxiety in a sample of 11 Black college students. Specifically, he wants to determine if the number of self-reported experiences of racial discrimination predict anxiety about the future. He asks students to fill out a questionnaire with higher scores indicating a larger number of perceived experiences of racial discrimination. He then administers a questionnaire designed to assess anxiety about the future in four domains: social, professional, health, and financial. Scores on the questionnaire can range from 1 to 30, with higher scores indicating higher anxiety about the future. All data are listed in the table below. Does perceived racial discrimination predict levels of anxiety about the future? [Scenario inspired by Sosoo, E.E., Bernard, D.L., and Neblett, E.W., Jr. (2020). The influence of internalized racism on the relationship between discrimination and anxiety. Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, 26(4), 570-580.] Using this table, enter the data into a new SPSS data file. Use the appropriate test to analyze the question and create the appropriate graph. Follow the directions under the table.

A key social issue facing community psychologists is economic disparities and marginalization. This social issue is the root of many other individual and community problems. A major issue with economic disparity is income and wealth disparity (Bullock, 2017). There is a huge divide in America between the top and bottom earners. A study in 2010 indicates that 20% of people own more than 88% of the nationās wealth (Bullock, 2017). This apparent divide is the cause of many economic issues for people on the lower level of earners. It causes a lack of healthcare, adequate housing, education, food, and clothing. Marginalization is another social issue in America. It is intersectional with income disparity and can cause other social issues in the community. The lack of equal access and fair treatment is the root of racism, sexism, classism, and other prejudices. The most affected groups by marginalization and economic disparity are Latinos, Hispanics, African Americans, and members of the LGBTQ community (Miller, 2017). The Community Psychologist must collaborate with stakeholders, politicians, and community leaders to create strategies, intervention plans, prevention plans, and programs that transform these people's lives.
