If cytoplasmic streaming is occurring, you will see the chloroplasts circulating around the cell. Cytoplasmic streaming is controlled by microfilaments in the cell cytoskeleton. These filaments of actin and myosin move cellular contents in an active process that requires energy. What is the benefit to the cell of spending energy to circulate the chloroplasts throughout the cytoplasm?

Notice the empty space in the middle of the cells What structure takes up this space? What is the name for the movement of chloroplasts within the cell? What purpose does this movement serve? What two proteins mediate this process?

For each of the following, decide whether it applies to actin filaments, intermediate filaments, and/or microtubules. NOTE: there may be multiple answers for each statement. A. Found in the nucleus and cytoplasm B. Involved in the transport of vesicles and organelles C. Associate with proteins that help adhere cells to the extracellular matrix D. Their stability is influenced by nucleotide hydrolysis E. Directly involved in phagocytosis F. Can associate into bundles with the help of other proteins.
