In a healthy person at rest, what are the gas pressures at the end of the pulmonary capillaries relative to those in the alveoli?
Adi S.
If all pulmonary capillaries are open when lying down, what is the functional effect on the rate of diffusion of O2 and CO2?
Supreeta N.
A retired athlete has been diagnosed with lung fibrosis. After running clinical tests to assess his blood oxygenation capacity, the doctors determine that, at rest, ~99% O2 saturation is reached at z0.99/L = 40% of the pulmonary capillary distance (L = 500 μm), and blood velocity in the pulmonary capillaries is 2,700 μm/s. (Tip: an exponential function drops to about 1% when its argument is increased by a factor of 5). For normal red blood cells (RBC), it can be assumed that the characteristic diffusion distance LRBC is 1.5 μm, the hemoglobin binding kinetic constant is 125 s-1, and the diffusion coefficient of O2 in RBC is 6.0 x 10-6 cm2/s. Also, from tests conducted before the athlete developed the disease, the doctors estimated that the permeability of the external layer (respiratory boundary plus plasma, as shown in Figure 2) is 0.29 cm/s. 3.a. Calculate the Thiele modulus φ and the effectiveness factor η (Note: the external transport cannot be neglected in this case). (5 points) 3.b. Estimate the permeability PFIB of the fibrous scar tissue. Assume that PFIB is in series with the permeability of the external layer. (5 points) Figure 2. External transport of O2 across the fibrous scar tissue and the external layer (respiratory boundary plus plasma).
