There are many techniques for investigating human genomic disorders. Western blotting looks for protein, Eastern blotting looks for post-translational changes, Northern blotting looks at mRNA, and Southern blotting looks at DNA. If you were to look at sickle cell anemia, a disorder affecting hemoglobin produced in red blood cells, which technique would be the most useful in detecting polymorphism in a sample? a. Northern blotting b. Southern blotting c. Western blotting d. Eastern blotting
Southern blotting is Attachment of probes to DNA fragments Transfer of DNA fragments from electrophoretic gel to a nitrocellulose sheet Comparison of DNA fragments to two sources Transfer of DNA fragments to electrophoretic gel from cellulose membrane

You are interested in examining the transcription and protein level of the exam gene. What is the major difference between a Northern blot and a Western blot? A Northern blot will show us the exact location of the exam mRNA; whereas a Western blot will show the exact location of the Exam protein in the cell. A Northern blot uses a probe that hybridizes to the exam mRNA; whereas a Western blot uses an antibody to bind to the Exam protein. A Northern blot does the same thing as a Western blot where a specific nucleic acid probe is used to recognize exam. A Northern blot will show you the size of the exam mRNA; whereas a Western blot doesn't show the size of the Exam protein.
