Imagine that you are studying a newly discovered organism. You observe that it can make energy (ATP) from sugars if you feed them to it. The organism can also make ATP when exposed to sunlight. When you observe its cells under a microscope, you find that the DNA is enclosed inside its own lipid membrane that is inside the cell membrane. Based on these observations, list three organelles you would expect to find inside the cells of this organism For each organelle you list, explain (using 1-2 sentences) why one of the observations is consistent with that organelle being present .

Match the following cell organelles with their correct functions. Cell membrane Ribosome Mitochondria Golgi apparatus Nucleus Smooth ER Chloroplast Rough ER Cytoplasm Cell wall 1. Site where protein folding occurs; has ribosomes on its surface 2. Site where sugars are broken down and energy is released as ATP 3. Maintains the shape of plant cells and provides rigidity 4. Holds the organelles of a cell in a watery mix 5. Regulates movement of material in and out of the cell 6. Site of protein synthesis 7. Houses DNA and RNA 8. Traps light energy from the sun 9. Prepares and packages proteins for transport 10. Site of lipid assembly; lacks ribosomes

1. How do the organelles found within different cells vary based on the function of the cell or the type of cell? Examples really help. 2. Compare and contrast simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, and active transport. In your answer, be sure to include an explanation of how each process works, the energy cost to the cell, and give one example of each. 3. Compare and contrast how carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids are used in aerobic respiration and the amount of energy we can gain from each. In your answer, be sure to explain why there is a difference in the amount of energy we get from the different types of molecules.

Write the Functions of Each Organelle Describe the function of each organelle. Cytoplasm shows all of the material present in a cell except the nucleus. It provides a platform for various cellular activities such as glycolysis. Chloroplasts are membrane-bound cell organelles found in photosynthetic organisms. Cell wall is a rigid outer protecting layer present in bacteria, fungi, plants, and some protists. Centrioles are small cell organelles found near the nucleus of animal cells.
