Each iron atom can form six coordination bonds. Two of these bonds are formed between iron and oxygen. Each hemoglobin or myoglobin molecule can bind four oxygen molecules. Hemoglobin is a heterotetramer, whereas myoglobin is a monomer. Heme is composed of an organic protoporphyrin component and a metal atom. By itself, heme is not a good oxygen carrier. It must be part of a larger protein to prevent oxidation of the iron atom. Both hemoglobin and myoglobin contain a prosthetic group called heme, which contains a central iron atom. Molecular oxygen binds reversibly to Fe2+ in heme.

#4) when oxygen binds to heme-containing protein, the two open coordination bonds of Fe^2+ are occupied by one O2 molecule and one amino acid atom. true or false

Hemoglobin is a metalloprotein that mainly functions as an oxygen-transport protein in the blood. The metal ion found in hemoglobin is ________ (you do not need to specify ionic charge, just enter the element symbol). This metal ion is usually bound to a ________ atom in the imidazole ring of histidine. (enter element symbol) In the deoxymyoglobin form, the oxidation state of the metal ion is ________ (enter plus/minus charge and a number. For example "+1"). Once dioxygen binds to the metal ion, its oxidation state changes to ________ (enter plus/minus charge and a number. For example "+1"). 2- In hydroxocobalamin, four of the six coordination sites are provided by the ________ atoms in the corrin ring, and a fifth by a ________ atom in a dimethylbenzimidazole group. The sixth coordination site is a hydroxyl group, in which the donor atom is ________ (enter element symbols).
