1. In cells, glycerol can be oxidized to glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate. Propose a theoretical two-step reaction scheme for how this might occur in cells. Be sure to draw the metabolite intermediate and list any cofactors or other substrates that would be used. Predict the class of each enzyme used to catalyze your proposed reactions.

This reaction is catalyzed by the enzyme glycerol kinase, which belongs to the transferase class of enzymes. The cofactor ATP is used in this reaction, and ADP is produced as a byproduct. \[ \text{Glycerol} + \text{ATP} \xrightarrow{\text{Glycerol Kinase}} Show more…

Show the mechanism for the reaction of glycerol with ATP to form glycerol- 3 -phosphate.
Glycerol is a byproduct of TAG break-down. In liver, glycerol can be phosphorylated by Glycerol Kinase to generate glycerol-3-phosphate. This molecule is then oxidized by Glycerol Phosphate Dehydrogenase (and NAD+) to yield dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP). Given the following ½ reactions: glycerol-3-P + H2O → glycerol + Pi ΔG°' = - 9.2 kJ/mol ATP + H2O → ADP + Pi ΔG°' = - 30.5 kJ/mol a) (2 pts) Write the full reaction catalyzed by the Glycerol Kinase enzyme. b) (2 pts) Calculate the ΔG°' of this reaction. c) (2 pts) The kinase enzyme energetically coupled these two reactions. Why? d) (2 pts) What are two possible fates for glycerol that has been metabolized as shown above? Under what physiological conditions do you suppose each fate is favored?
