In Mendel's pea plants, there is a gene that controls pea shape (round is dominant to wrinkled), and a second gene that controls pea color (yellow is dominant to green). What is the phenotypic ratio of the offspring plants from a dihybrid cross between two round yellow pea plants? Step 1: Identify the genes and choose a letter to represent EACH gene (2 different letters). Step 2: Define the alleles for each gene. There should be two types of letters with capital and lowercase for each. Step 3: Write down the genotypes for the cross. Don't forget each plant must be diploid (have 2 alleles) for each gene – so 4 letters total! Step 4: Draw the Punnett square. Write one gamete allele combination over each column or row. *Remember the FOIL method to identify the gamete allele combinations… Step 5: Use the filled-in Punnett square to answer the question.

In pea plants, seed shape and seed color are controlled by genes located on different chromosomes. Seeds may be round (R) or wrinkled (r), with the allele for round seeds being dominant. Alleles for seed color are yellow and green, with the green allele (y) recessive to the yellow (Y) allele. If you cross an individual that is homozygous round and yellow with an individual that is homozygous for wrinkled and green, what is the genotype of the F1 individuals? Set up a Punnett square for the dihybrid cross.
