Negative feedback and homeostasis. Complete the following paragraph to describe how negative feedback maintains homeostasis. Homeostasis is the maintenance of a internal environment by an organism, or even by a single cell. Even though external conditions may change dramatically, internal conditions stay within a range. The primary homeostatic mechanism that keeps conditions close to a particular value, or set point, is called feedback. This homeostatic mechanism includes a , which detects changes in the internal environment, and a , which directs a response that brings conditions back to normal again. For example, when blood pressure rises, a detects it and relays that information to the in the brain.
