In reply to Singer's Shallow Pond Analogy, some critics have argued
that the analogy does not hold because in the case of the drowning
child, only one person is available to help. In the case of world
poverty, however, a lot of other people can help. So, there is no
moral requirement to help the poor when so many can help. In
response to this objection, the authors point out that the number of
people who can help only reveals that all those that do not help
(including yourself) are not morally blameworthy.
