In the cerebellum, a second mitotic layer, the external granular layer, forms at the region farthest removed from the ventricular zone. A type of neuron called granule cells migrate past Purkinje neurons which express which keeps the granule cells mitotic. Once the granule cells reach the external granular layer, they are exposed to high levels of which induces their differentiation as they migrate back into the intermediate zone to form the internal granular layer.
