Use the hypothetical experiment below. Cinderella places 3 eggs into vinegar. The vinegar, which is about 4% acetic acid, dissolves the calcium carbonate shells off the eggs. The now "naked" eggs are still intact and are held together by the two fragile membranes inside the shell. Cinderella weighs each egg and the mass of each egg is roughly 80 grams. Next, Cinderella places each egg into a beaker. Each beaker contains a different solution. Beaker 1: distilled water Beaker 2: 10% sucrose solution Beaker 3: 40% sucrose solution. Step 1: Indicate below which solution is hypertonic compared to the egg, which is hypotonic compared to the egg, and which is isotonic compared to the egg. Step 2: Write 3 different hypotheses, one for each egg, about what will happen to the mass of the egg over time as it sits in the solution in the beaker. Predict what will happen to the mass of each egg in the different beakers if your hypotheses are supported and explain why the mass would change in that manner.

In the Osmosis, Effect of Solute Concentration experiment where dialysis bags were filled with either water, 10% sucrose or 20% sucrose and then placed in a beaker of water or sucrose for one hour, the bag with 20% sucrose placed in water should a. gain more weight than the bag with 10% sucrose placed in water b. lose more weight than the bag with 10% sucrose placed in water c. gain less weight than the bag with 10% sucrose placed in water d. lose less weight than the bag with 10% sucrose placed in water e. none of the above
