In the plant life cycle, the generation produces haploid spores via meiosis. The spores germinate and divide to produce haploid gametes. In sporophytes, special regions termed gametangia produce gametes. In gametophytes, special regions produce spores. In homosporous plants, the gametangia are antheridia and archegonia. Antheridia will release cells called sperm, while archegonia will contain cells called eggs.
