Integrating center (Compare to set point) Afferent pathway Efferent pathway Receptor Effector Begin Stimulus Response Negative feedback Figure 1.7 General components of a reflex arc that functions as a negative feedback control system. The response of the system has the effect of counteracting or eliminating the stimulus. This phenomenon of negative feedback is emphasized by the minus sign in the dashed feedback loop. The pathway mediating a reflex is known as the reflex arc, and its components are shown in Figure 1.7. A stimulus is defined as a detectable change in the internal or external

Problem #2: During childbirth, the fetus is pushed against the uterine opening causing it to stretch. Receptors that detect the stretching send signals to the brain. The brain sends both neural and hormonal signals which increase both the contraction force and the contraction frequency in the smooth muscles of the uterus. This continues until the baby is delivered through the birth canal. Is this a positive or negative feedback loop? The drop in blood pH is detected by chemoreceptors in the aorta and carotid artery. These receptors send nerve impulses to the respiratory center in the medulla, which helps remove carbon dioxide from the blood, returning blood pH to normal levels. Is this a positive or negative feedback loop?

Match the components of the reflex arc with the correct function. (Not all answer choices will be used). Sensory Receptor A. Detects the stimulus Sensory Neuron B. Sends a signal to the CNS Integration Center C. Processes Information Motor Neuron D. Sends a signal to the effector Effector E. Carries out the response F. Interneuron
