Within cells are structures called chromosomes, which are composed of genetic material in the form of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA).
Each time a cell divides by mitosis, during the cell cycle, the DNA is first replicated or copied, and each of the two resulting daughter cells inherits a complete set of chromosomes identical to that of the parent cell.
Each chromosome contains one very long DNA molecule with hundreds of thousands of genes: each gene is a short section of DNA. Transmitted from parents to offspring, genes are the units of inheritance. They encode the information necessary to build all of the molecules synthesised within a cell, which in turn establish that cell's identity and function. Each of us began as a single cell stocked with DNA inherited from our parents. The replication of that DNA during each cell cycle, transmitted copies of the DNA to what eventually became the trillions of cells of our body. As the cells continued to grow and divide, the genetic information encoded by the DNA directed our development. DNA is also the molecule that is transcribed and translated into proteins via three types of RNA and using the genetic code.
