Channels (gates on neurons that allow ions to flow through them are called voltage-gated because they open and close in response to changes in the voltage across the cell membrane. Some examples of voltage-gated ion channels include sodium channels and potassium channels. When the voltage across the cell membrane reaches a certain threshold, these channels open, allowing ions to flow into or out of the cell, thereby stopping or initiating depolarization.
