The First Major Evolutionary Breakthrough The first major advancement in plant evolution was the development of vascular tissue. Vascular tissue allowed plants to grow much larger and compete better for sunlight, water, and nutrients. The Fern Division, Horsetail Division, and the less known "Whiskfern" Division of plants are still alive today and illustrate this first evolutionary advancement while still having the original primitive characteristics. The Second Major Evolutionary Breakthrough The second major advancement was the development of a seed in place of a spore. You must learn the difference between the two. In brief, a spore is usually a single cell that can divide into a multicellular organism. A seed, on the other hand, is an embryonic plant with an attached food supply and is covered by a seed coat. When you think of seeds, consider the peanut. The "hinge" that holds the two halves (food canisters) together is essentially the embryo and hence, roughly equivalent to a spore.
