1.1 Carefully read the following case study before completing the task. Case Study: Silas`s Journey to Adjustment and Integration You are the principal of a school in a large town in South Africa. The Grade 2 teacher has reported her frustrations with a new learner, Silas, who is 11 years old. Silas, his parents, and his two younger siblings relocated after fleeing from a war-torn country elsewhere in Africa. Due to the conflict, Silas has missed significant amounts of schooling, which is why he is 11 years old in Grade 2. Silas struggles with English, making it difficult for the teacher and his classmates to understand him. He appears lethargic, loses interest in lessons quickly, often gets up and walks around the classroom, and sometimes sleeps on his arms at his desk. He has not made any friends, and the other children avoid him because he is much older and bigger than they are. The family lives in a sink shack in an informal settlement on the outskirts of town. Although they are not illegal immigrants (Silas’s father is South African), they came from a very small village, and Silas’s mother finds it challenging to cope in such a large town. The family faces financial difficulties; Silas’s father is seeking work on local farms, while his mother works as a domestic worker. Silas’s mother, who speaks English fairly well, is concerned about Silas’s health due to a family history of diabetes. (Wilson, 2024) Write an essay in which you outline your intervention plan to support Silas. Ensure that you cover the following points: Explain how you would help the teacher understand Silas’s situation by addressing the physical, cognitive, psychological, and social factors that might be impacting him. Provide advice on teaching and learning strategies that could be beneficial in supporting Silas. Describe how you would assist Silas’s mother in coping with their new environment, supporting Silas in his new school setting, and accessing necessary services. Identify other role players and resources you would engage in your efforts to improve Silas’s situation. Justify why you believe these role players and resources would be helpful.
