Last lecture we saw how carbon dioxide can react with water to form carbonic acid, a physiological buffer. Atmospheric CO2 undergoes the same reaction and has been steadily increasing for decades. As of today, our current atmospheric CO2 is 415.24 ppm compared to only 305 ppm in the 1950s.
a. If acidity of rainwater arises solely from carbonic acid (it does not) and unpolluted rainwater has a pH of 5.5 determine the pH of clean, unpolluted rainwater from 1950.
b. Determine the volume of CO2 is dissolved in a 100-gallon bucket at STP.
