Both the male and female external reproductive anatomy are contained within the boundaries known as the perineum. The anterior boundary is the pubic symphysis, while the two lateral borders of the perineum are the paired ischial tuberosities. These landmarks define the boundaries of the perineum and the inferior-most section of the urogenital triangle. The perineum can be bisected by drawing a line between the resulting anterior and posterior triangles. The anterior triangle is known as the urogenital triangle because of the location of the urethral orifice and the reproductive organs. The posterior triangle is known as the anal triangle and is defined by the ischial tuberosities and the coccyx.
