Lipids Take another look at the two nutrition labels above. Observing both labels, you will notice that there are five different lipid molecules listed. saturated fats, polyunsaturated fats, monounsaturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol a. Of these 5, list the molecules that can be converted to cholesterol in your liver: Trans fat, Saturated fats, monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats b. Of these 5, list the molecules that contain fatty acids in their structure: Monounsaturated fats, Polyunsaturated fats, c. Of these 5, list the molecules that are commonly synthesized by animals:

Lipids: Lipids are classified not by a particular structure but by the physical property of being water-insoluble. Structural categories of Lipids: 1. Triacylglycerides (fat): The structure of fat consists of 3 fatty acids linked by their carboxylic acid groups to the alcohols of a glycerol molecule. The resultant functional groups are esters. Butter and vegetable oil are examples of fat. The difference in phase (crystalline vs. fluid) is caused by the number of double bonds in the long fatty acid chains. They can be fully saturated (all carbon – carbon single bonds) as in butter or they are unsaturated (1 or more double bonds) as in vegetable oil (always cis double bonds in nature). Look on line to answer this question: Why it is important to see ‘zero trans fats’ on food labels?

Lipids, also called fats or oils, can be found in cell membranes. Which of the molecules shown below is a lipid?
Keemin L.
The fatty acids of triglycerides are classified as saturated, unsaturated, or trans fats. What is it about the structure of these compounds that gives them their physical characteristics? a. Saturated fats and trans fats contain the greatest possible number of hydrogen atoms, while unsaturated fats do not. b. Saturated and unsaturated fats have stable configurations, while trans fats are transient. c. Unsaturated fats and trans fats have some double bonded carbon atoms, while saturated fats do not. d. Unsaturated and trans fats are the same; the fatty acids are just found on opposite sides of a trans fat.
