Make a primitive diagram of the heart and associated blood vessels. It must be your own drawing (not a pre-printed diagram). It does not need to show extensive structural detail. Label each of the listed structures in your diagram. Show the direction of blood flow through each structure. When completed, you should have a clear picture of the two circulation routes: pulmonary circulation and systemic circulation. Include the left atrium, right atrium, left ventricle, right ventricle (in correct anatomical location), the AV valves between the corresponding atrium and ventricle, the SL valves where blood exits the corresponding ventricle, the superior and inferior vena cava, the pulmonary trunk and branching to the left and right pulmonary arteries (connect each artery to the corresponding lung), the left and right pulmonary veins (show the pulmonary veins connected to the corresponding lung), the aorta (divide the aorta into two parts, connect one part to the superior vena cava and the other part to the inferior vena cava). Make a primitive microscopic view of five to six cardiac muscle cells. The cells are connected together by intercalated discs. At least one of your drawn cells must branch to connect to two cells. Show the direction of action potential transmission through your drawn cells. Now that you have an image of how cardiac muscle cells are connected, explain how the electrical conduction system of the heart operates. Explain how each chamber has coordinated contraction which forces blood out of the chamber.
