Mani is 24-year-old first-generation American. His parents immigrated from Turkey and have
held on to the traditional cultural beliefs of their homeland. Mani was raised in a Muslim house-
hold, and although alcohol is consumed in his culture, drugs are strictly forbidden. Reaching
the age of expected marriage, he has begun to struggle with his American life and the cultural
expectations his parents are trying to reenforce. In high school and college, Mani drank alcohol
and began experimenting with club drugs. Two weeks ago, Mani was arrested for driving under
the influence (DUI) of alcohol and drugs after driving the wrong way down a one-way street in
the city. Luckily, no one was hurt. This was his second DUI, and because he has a history of other
drug use, he was referred for an evaluation for treatment. When asked about his alcohol and drug use, Mani stated that he needed to escape the life his parents had planned for him, and when he was partying was the only time he felt ‘normal’.
